Design, Analysis and Modeling of Four Switch Inverter Derived BLDC Motor Using Space Vector Modulation

Abstract:

In this paper presents a design; analysis and modeling of a three phase star-connected brushless direct current (BLDC) motor derived by four switch space vector modulated inverter. The construction and operation of the both BLDC motor and its inverter is presented and state-space models are derived for each. A novel space vector control (SVC) with six commutation modes and novel pulse width modulation scheme is developed to drive BLDC motors. The low cost BLDC driver is achieved by the reduction of switch device count and cost down of control. Matlab/Simulink models are developed and verified. Torque, speed and position control is applied using hysteresis band control, SVC and variable dc-link voltage control. The different control strategies are tested on the BLDC motor and their performance evaluated. The frequency content of the dc link current is investigated for each control method and the impact of commutation delay and switching losses is discussed. Simulation show that all the control strategies work quite well although each method has its drawbacks.
