Design and Characterization of High Gain Dual Band Shared Aperture Array Antenna for Space Borne Applications

This paper proposes a novel dual-band Shared-Aperture Antenna (SAA) for space borne applications. The proposed antenna is formed based on the aperture coupled antenna structure which consists of radiating patch in the top layer, slot aperture in the middle layer and the feed line in the third layer. Since gain and dual band operation play a vital role in space borne antenna, 2*2 shared-aperture array antenna is designed to operate at L-band and S-band of frequencies. The antenna is simulated and the performance is validated with that of measured results. The measured antenna gain is 11.73dBi and 11.65dBi with the return loss of -39.52dB and -26.19dB at 1.7GHz and 3.3GHz respectively.
