Mechanical Characteristics and Corrosion Behaviour of Friction Stir Welded Particulate Reinforced Aluminum Matrix Composite

Abstract:

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid state joining process which has an ability to produce high quality welds and is widely used for welding aluminum alloys. FSW is one of the most suitable welding processes to weld the AMCs reinforced with particulate form of ceramics without deteriorating its superior mechanical properties. This paper deals with the effect of process parameters on the tensile strength, hardness and corrosion characteristics of friction stir welded aluminum metal matrix composite (A2014/Al2O3/10p). Friction stir welding is performed with three different tool speeds and two different weld speeds. The impact strength of the joints increases first and decreases with the tool rotation speed. The corrosion susceptibility of the welded joints was studied by conducting polarization tests using a potentiostat. The corrosion results were correlated to the microstructural modifications induced by the FSW process on the aluminum alloy matrix and the reinforcement.
