Performance Evaluation of Cluster Based Sensor Networks Using Priority Based N-Policy Queueing Model

Wireless Sensor Networks have expansive applications like environment monitoring, target tracking and surveillance. A censorious issue in wireless sensor networks is represented by the limited availability of energy within the network and hence optimizing energy is very important. Several algorithms are proposed to minimize the energy consumption of sensor nodes and one such energy minimization techniques is based on queue threshold. The main drawback of this method is that it is suitable only for delay insensitive applications since the packets suffer more delay as they are queued until a threshold is reached before transmission. In this paper, we propose a new technique where delay is considered by adding priority during packet transmission. An analytical model of cluster based Heterogeneous sensor networks is developed to analyze the performance of proposed technique in terms of delay. Results show that minimum delay occurs for high priority packets. Simulations are performed and the results obtained show that the analytical results match with simulation results thus validating the analytical model.
